At 50, Kelly Ripa maintains probably the most enviable figures within the entertainment industry. On top of her healthy eating and active lifestyle habits, apparently she also relies on nightly sips of turmeric and ginger tea to provide her a fat-burning boost.
The talk show host's bedtime beverage was shared by Dr. Daryl Gioffre, author of Get Off Your Sugar (Buy on Amazon, $16.15). He helped Ripa tame her sweet tooth and said that she “will drink a detox tea with turmeric, ginger, lemon, and pepper at night to crush any cravings, and keep your body in a peak, strengthened state.”
Along with ridding Ripa of her sugar impulses, one study found that the curcumin in turmeric works to lessen the spread of fat through the body. “Weight gain may be the consequence of the development and expansion of fat tissue, which cannot happen unless new arteries form, a process known as angiogenesis,” Mohsen Meydani, DVM, PhD, lead author from Tufts University explains. “Based on our data, curcumin appears to suppress angiogenic activity in the fat tissue.”
Dr. Meydani's team came to this conclusion after observing animals fed high-fat diets for 12 weeks. They were split up into two groups with one receiving curcumin supplements and also the other not having. “Curcumin appeared to be responsible for total lower body fat within the group that received supplementation,” said Meydani. Additionally they noticed lower cholesterol levels and fatty liver levels in the subjects.
As for ginger, a comprehensive overview of several studies demonstrated that compounds called zingerone and shogaols within the root had promising results for higher fat-burning and lower fat cell function benefits. Ginger might help melt off pounds by itself, but combining it with turmeric for a soothing tea will clearly pack a much more powerful punch!
You can purchase pre-blended tea options like Great Value Organic Ginger Turmeric Herbal Tea (Buy at Walmart, $2.97). It is also simple to combine a brew yourself with about half a teaspoon of ground turmeric and ginger sprinkled into boiling water.
Either way, adding a squeeze of lemon and dash of ground pepper like Ripa for your mug will help amp in the fat-burning benefits, too. Lemon and other citruses are known for revving metabolism while pepper helps the body absorb turmeric's perks better.
Follow Ripa’s routine of sipping a cupful of this before bedtime and you can allow it to work its slimming magic while you sleep, too!
