For people who love to eat, drink, and be merry, it is a holiday tradition to wake up one morning and discover that even our stretchy pants really are a bit snug. This sends many of us looking online for a fix. “But when you Google 'holiday detox,' you receive a lot more than 200 million matches,” says Joy Bauer, M.S., R.D.N., Today show nutrition expert and host of NBC's Health + Happiness. “The choices are overwhelming, plus many are ineffective or dangerous.”

Good news: As a gift to women everywhere, Joy created a healthy holiday detox that actually works wonders. “It's simple, based on science and very energizing,” she promises. Better yet, it may whisk off a full size! “So you are able to celebrate the season and get back to feeling and looking your best very quickly!”

When Joy recruited a group of volunteers to check her holiday detox for Woman's World, “all from the feedback was positive,” she reports. “People who'd been in juice fasts and intense detoxes were especially pleased to have actual hearty and delicious food. Many commented they felt really full and satisfied.”

Turns out that was one of Joy's main goals. Recption menus below is loaded with food and drinks proven to block hunger – like eggs at breakfast. They have a mixture of proteins that slash appetite by 400 calories on days we eat them, per University of Connecticut research. You will also sip a large glass of water with every meal, a trick MRI scans show actually flips a “switch” within the stomach and activates a stop-eating region of the brain. On top of that, you'll consume lots of filling fiber from veggies, fruit and nuts. Bonus: “Being well-nourished and well-hydrated lifts your mood,” says Joy. So you will be quite content as her plan goes to work blasting bloat and fat.

Speed-Slim Nutrients

There are lots of ways Joy's detox makes fat disappear. To begin with, you'll keep both calories and refined carbs down. You'll also get lots of protein and antioxidants associated with faster metabolism. As well as humble fiber has been shown to “stick” with a from the food within our system, blocking the absorption of about 150 calories each day.

But the secret that really sets Joy's approach apart? Plenty of potassium. The superhero mineral does many important things inside ourselves, from helping nerves work to making our heart beat. It can also make our waist shrink like lightning. “Potassium flushes sodium out of our bodies, triggering our body to produce bloat,” says Joy. She says you are able to drop a simple five pounds of “false fat” by swapping processed junk for potassium-rich fare like greens, salmon, beans, and tomato.

There's more: A little but exciting new study published within the journal Nutrients discovered that dieters who get the most potassium shed probably the most weight. Actually, “increased dietary potassium was a stronger predictor of weight loss than such well-established factors like a reduction in sugar consumption and overall calorie intake,” according to Tel Aviv University's Brurya Tal, Ph.D., and Jessica Sack, M.D.

Though this is a brand-new section of diet research, we already have three other studies confirming a hyperlink between more potassium and getting lean faster – with experts theorizing the mineral shifts hormonal balance in support of fat loss. “I can't wait to determine future studies,” says Joy. Meanwhile, she says, “Eating potassium-rich foods is a healthy idea for everyone. I hope it is something you will find within my detox and stick to for good!”
